Beautifully filmed, and musically entrancing.
After by Alberto Gomez – In early April 2011, a contest was posted to Vimeo as part of the Saatchi & Saatchi new director showcase at Cannes. The rules for the Hello, Future contest was simple:
“interpret and bring to life the idea of ‘Hello, Future’ in the form of a fantastic music video for 1 of 3 of Moby’s tracks from his new album, Destroyed.”
When the contest ended, Alberto Gómez’s video After was the winner. Gómez, who recently graduated from the Vancouver Film School 2 years prior, won for his film cover of Moby’s Destroyed album track “After.” Gómez’s video succeeded 600 contest entries from filmmakers around the world participating in the video challenge. Then, on the 23rd of June, his film was featured as part of the Saatchi & Saatchi New Director Showcase at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, 2011.
I often tour Vimeo’s video selections when I am in need of inspiration for my writing. Oftentimes it takes only a song or a featured animation to get me writing again; however, Gómez’s video not only inspired me visually, but introduced me to Moby’s music all over again–well, this one song. Wherever the inspiration comes from, let me tell you, my friends, briefly, of my admiration for this beautifully filmed, and musically entrancing, short film.
The film has a strong and visually stimulating narrative of what appears to be people of lineage. Each frame is picturesque and beautifully complemented by the ballad. The theme is that of an awakening from death–possibly a blossoming of life. The visuals–artfully styling–clothing, and makeup draws you in to the sad Princess’s world, filled with symbolism. I think that the interpretation will vary from each individual viewing the short, although, I do not doubt that each will be inspired, as I have, to go out and do something–anything–creative.
