ArcLight Spotlight’s July Documentary Series

Premiering in July, ArcLight Documentary Series will feature on Tuesday nights, some of the best documentary films of the year to ArcLight Hollywood’s cinephile audience.

  • Thank You For Playing (2015) — Los Angeles Premiere, Tuesday, July 7th at 7:30 pm:  Ryan Green, an indie video game developer who’s building a poetic and artful video game called “That Dragon, Cancer” about his terminally-ill son, Joel. When one-year-old Joel is diagnosed with terminal cancer, his father Ryan begins working on an unusual and poetic video game to honor Joel’s life. The documentary follows Ryan’s family through the creation of the game and the day-to-day realities of Joel’s treatment, the film is a thought-provoking testimony to the empathetic power of art.

Post-screening Q&A with directors David Osit and Malika Zouhali-Worrall, followed by a reception in the ArcLight Upper Bar.

  • (T)ERROR (2015) — Los Angeles Premiere, Tuesday, July 14th at 7:30 pm:  The first documentary to place filmmakers on the ground during an active FBI counterterrorism sting operation. Viewers get an unfettered glimpse of the government’s counterterrorism tactics and the murky justifications behind them. Through the perspective of “Shariff,” a 63-year-old Black revolutionary turned informant, viewers get an unfettered glimpse of the government’s counterterrorism tactics and the murky justifications behind them.

Post-screening Q&A with co-director Lyric Cabral, followed by a reception in the ArcLight Upper Bar.

  • Song of Lahore (2015) — Los Angeles Premiere, Tuesday, July 21st at 7:30 pm: The story of several Pakistani classical musicians, who ask if there is still room for cultural expression in a society roiled by conflict. An unexpected jazz album brings international acclaim, but will they ever find an audience at home?

Post-screening Q&A with co-director Andy Schocken, followed by a reception in the ArcLight Upper Bar.

  • Prophet’s Prey (2015) — Los Angeles Premiere, Tuesday, July 28th at 7:30 pm:  When Warren Jeffs rose to lead the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), he brought his dictatorial and sadistic desires to bear on a society that was all too vulnerable to exploitation. The FLDS was already a paternalistic religion with a history of polygamous and underage marriage, yet Warren managed to expand these practices in unprecedented ways, bridging the gap between sister wives and ecclesiastically justified rape.

Post-screening Q&A with director Amy Berg, followed by a reception in the ArcLight Upper Bar.
