Walt Disney Pictures, Tim Burton released a featurette for the upcoming film Frankenweenie that includes appearances by director Tim Burton and some of the cast members of the film–Martin Short, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. The featurette gives great insight into Burton’s personal inspirations for creating Frankenweenie as well as some detail about the characters featured in the film.

Burton was moved to create a story about the love he had for a canine companion when he was a child believing this is the first huge relationship a child can have at a young age and because dogs have shorter life spans than humans, the death of a close friend is an inevitable issue. Even though, he originally envisioned Frankenweenie as a full-length, stop-motion animated film, in 1984, he directed the film as a live-action short for Disney.

“The reason I originally wanted to make Frankenweenie was based on growing up and loving horror movies. But it was also the relationship I had when I was a child with a certain dog I had.”

“Dogs obviously don’t usually live as long as people, so  you experience the end of that relationship. So that, in combination with the Frankenstein story, just seemed to be a very powerful thing to me–a very personal kind of remembrance.” Tim Burton.

Burtons’ decision to return to stop motion animation using the analogy of likening the amazingly sculpted foot tall puppets to the Frankenstein monster–bringing his creation to life. So he assembled a fantastic team of stop motion animators and designers to bring his concept “to life.” More detail about the film is revealed in the featurette. After the children of New Holland discover Victor’s secret, they use his shock treatment method to resurrect their deceased pets–and creating a chain reaction of chaos all over town.

Now on iTunes there is a free interactive book based on the film Frankenweenie: An Electrifying Book! Benefiting from the trans-media extension of the feature film, the book gives audiences an expanded view of the film and the immense time and skill animators put into each puppet, while enjoying the Burton’esq atmosphere from the film. Rough character designs will be available for you to create your own character, and an option to create blackboard scenes using digital stickers.

Frankenweenie is the latest film directed by Tim Burton and audiences are thrilled to have him return to stop motion animation, a recollection of the hit classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Charlie Tahan as the voice of Victor Frankenstein, a science loving ten year old who harnesses the power of lightning from a thunderstorm to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life.

In theaters October 5th.
