Jim Henson Company – Hollywood (May 10, 2012) – Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Gustafson (Animation Director on The Fantastic Mr. Fox) are set to co-direct Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio. Del Toro isn’t a stranger when it comes to animation productions: he recently served as executive producer of DreamWorks Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2, and as ‘creative consultant’ on the film Megamind. Del Toro’s “Pinocchio” will be the first animated film helmed by the writer-director-producer.
The Jim Henson Company production, Pinocchio, will be a 3D “stop-motion” animation version based on Carlo Collodi‘s classic tale of Pinocchio, illustrated by Gris Grimly. In this “retelling” of one of the world’s most beloved tales, the puppet Pinocchio will embark on a series of adventures to prove himself to be “as indestructible as his love for his father.” The film will follow the legendary puppet as it experiences adventures in Italy between World War I and World War II. The story is the work of Del Toro; the screenplay by Matthew Robbins, along with the story and artistic collaborations by Gris Grimly.
“Guillermo has been so passionate about this project from its inception and it is an honor to have him bring his unique blend of live action and animation experience to this well-loved story, collaborating with the talented Mark Gustafson,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company.
Over the course of his prolific career, Del Toro’s films and collaborations have grossed over $3 billion worldwide and have won countless international festival and academy awards. Currently, Del Toro over sees no fewer than 14 creative projects and note that this collaborative “retelling” will be unfamiliar to Disney 1940′s classic animated tale. This is a “Del Toro” production; do not expect to see a “blue fairy.”
Pinocchio is set to begin shooting in the summer of 2013.
