Universal Pictures (May 31, 2012) – Jeremy Renner goes from starring as Clint Barton/Hawkeye of The Avengers, to starring as Aaron Cross, an assassin for Operation Outcome (formerly known as Treadstone) in The Bourne Legacy. Cross appears to be the replacement agent for Jason Bourne, formerly portrayed by Matt Damon. It’s trippy that ‘Jason Bourne’ is mentioned throughout the trailer–is it a possibly that Damon might reprise his role as Bourne? A possible showdown between the two men? Or in a future installment?
Damon originally stated he only wanted to do another film if Paul Greengrass was the director. However, Greengrass is one of three directors behind the film, leaving room for Damon’s return now or in the future up for speculation.
Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.
Rachel Weiss co-stars as Stephanie Snyder, the other protagonist of the film. Edward Norton will be portraying the film’s antagonist, Byer. Meanwhile, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles as members of the CIA.
The Bourne Legacy debuts in theaters August 3rd, 2012.
