Gerard Butler. Nuff said.
Director Antoine Fuqua‘s Olympus Has Fallen is another film with a familiar theme: The White House is under attack, and a lone hero has to come and save the day. From the looks of the trailer, be prepared to see a lot of explosions, Gerard Butler as Mike Banning, and a disgraced Presidential guard who finds himself trapped in the White House with terrorist. In a very familiar Die Hard‘esq method of communication between himself and House Speaker Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) and Secret Service Director Lynn Jacobs (Angela Bassett), Mike Banning will some how save the day.
Synopsis: When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning’s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President and avert an even bigger disaster.
Wait a minute–isn’t there another movie coming out this summer with sort of the same theme? In fact, there is. White House Down (2013) is coming to theaters this summer, from director Roland Emmerich, the same director who gave us Independence Day (1996). This film will star Channing Tatum as–you may have already guessed–a Secret Service agent there to protect the President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) with Secret Service Agent Maggie Gyllenhaal. Fortunately this time, we won’t have to sit through another alien take over.
With all the explosions and bullet dodging queued in this summer, I hope both movies will be good. If it has a good story and compelling characters, then we may have a couple of winners here overall.
