A sorcerer and his demon.
The Sorcerer and the White Snake (Bai she chuan shou) a new film starring Jet Li by action director Siu-Tung Ching (Hero (2002), House of Flying Daggers). The film is based on an ancient Chinese legend, a romance tale rather, of Madame White Snake, or the Legend of the White Snake a beautiful woman who is also a thousand-year old white snake, who wanted to experience the power of love. She meets her true love Xu Xian (Raymond Lam), a herbalist, who also falls in love with her. As with all things that come with love, there are complications.
Synopsis: Action director Ching Siu-Tung helms this fantasy film based on an old Chinese legend about an herbalist who falls in love with a thousand-year-old White Snake disguised as a woman. Jet Li stars as a sorcerer who discovers her true identity and battles to save the man’s soul.
The film debut in Venice in 2011 and now it’s headed our way. The trailer looks amazing. I love it when directors take interest in old myths and legends and format these tales for the big screen. However, some of the special effects seemed somewhat on the low-end of the GC spectrum, but it’s not enough to take away my being excited to see this film. I am a bit worried if the story will be hard to follow. In most films like these that rely entirely on its artistry, and CG effects will seriously lack a cohesive story line.
As long as Jet Li is in the film it is at least worth a peek.
Magnolia Pictures The Sorcerer and the White Snake in theaters in February, but will be available on VOD/iTunes January 3rd.
