“Normal” enough to transcend the label of “Special.”
Dir. Joshua Tate‘s LOVE LAND (2014)* is perhaps one of Festival’s unique and stand out narrative features. Set against the backdrop of the Disability Rights Movement, LOVE LAND (2014) features a fully inclusive cast with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Something you do not see in mainstream film. This complex character study centers on the events focuses on the unique struggles of Ivy, Love Land‘s main character.
Ivy (Monica Gaseor) received a traumatic brain injury that impaired her cognitive and motor function. Refusing to be labeled as “disabled,” or “special,” she continues behaving recklessly. As a result, she finds herself in an institution for the intellectually disabled, the Love Land Ranch. It is there that she meets Roger (Michael Iovine), a young man with Down Syndrome, who also lives at the ranch. Ivy, in her desire to prove everyone that she isn’t disabled, she manipulates Roger in an attempt to break out of the facility to reunite with her boyfriend. “Ivy will stop at nothing to prove to the world, and to herself, that she is “normal” enough to transcend the label of “Special.””-Love Land (2014).
This is the first feature of its kind that represents people with disabilities on screen. In addition, several advocacy organizations have endorsed the film: The Disability Cinema Coalition (DCC), CommunityNow!, ADAPT of Texas, and Down Syndrome in Arts and Media just to name a few.
Love Land is holding its World Premiere as part of the 25th New Orleans Film Festival on October 18th at 5PM at the Prytania. If you are in town and would like to view the film, you can purchase your tickets here.
