The Darkness: Origins Vol. 1 – Review

Embrace The Comic That Inspired The Game!

I pre-ordered/purchased the Limited Edition of The Darkness II and I was entitled to free Digital editions of The Darkness: Origins Volumes 1 & 2; on the origin of Jackie Estacado, and the Darkness. I downloaded the versions to my Kindle Fire via the xComics app and eagerly began reading. What occurred next was this: I am now a fan of The Darkness series. I subscribe to The Walking Dead comic, and now this vividly dark, comic book series.

In Origins, we are at the beginning, when Jackie Estacado discovers, at the age of 21, the struggle of the power of The Darkness. He sees it as a burden, and as much as Jackie despises his “gift,” he enjoys it equally as much. You see, the Darkness made Jackie an efficient and ruthless killer, and as a member of one of the most notorious crime families, the Franchetti’s, Jackie proves to be invaluable.

Consider Jackie an anti-hero of sorts. Regardless of his job as a hitman for the Franchetti crime family, he truly has a moral and ethical element to his character. If anyone causes harm to the ones he loves, expect Jackie to kill without remorse.

“(1996) “Coming Of Age” – On his 21st birthday, mafia hitman Jackie Estacado is both blessed and cursed when he becomes the latest bearer of The Darkness, an ancient force that allows its bearer access to an otherworldly dimension and the demons who dwell there. Forces for good in the world rise to face Jackie and the evil his gift represents, but there is one small problem. In this story… they are the bad guys.”

To be expected, the comic is tremendously engaging–the art and the dialogue just popped out at you and lures you into the mythical world as Jackie struggles with his inner animalistic tendencies, as an inner voice beckons him to release the darkness… anytime he is confronted with pressing situations.  I am blown away by the artwork by Marc Silvestri. Each panel is vivid, incredibly detailed. The thrilling supernatural story by Garth Ennis solidifies absolutely, that in a world where a mafia hit-man, wielding the power of the Darkness, is an unstoppable force. The best thing of all–the characters. The Butcher, Jenny, and the Angelus, who wants to destroy Jackie, just as she’d killed his forefathers and more.

Origins is a solidified recommendation. It has a tremendously addictive reading impact, which if anyone wasn’t a fan of The Darkness games, may just find the comic more interesting. Jackie is the ultimate anti-hero–who wields chaos incarnate, which is pretty bad-ass.
