DVD Review: Dance Moms: Season 2, Vol. 1 and 2

Dance Moms Season 2 Volume 1It’s make it or break it time! Lifetime’s reality series, Dance Moms, centers around the renowned Abby Lee Dance Company; owned by famously outspoken Abby Lee Miller. This is no ordinary dance class–prepare yourself for a wild ride, teeming with temper tantrums, intense drama, and her interactions with the dancers moms and the incessant gossip, that it is the near equivalent to those competitive teeny tiara toddlers, only these girls are well choreographed. Sure we can’t get into an intense debate over these reality television shows that features mothers who are trying to live out their dreams through their kids without being overly critical about priorities. Dance Moms and the parents who like to gossip behind each other’s backs and a dance instructor who does not hesitate to condescend (or bully) the young girls who practice tirelessly. If you are one of the millions of people who watches any amount of reality television, can easily spot where a lot of the “reality” in these shows are “put on” realities, just for show. Not unusual for reality television series.

Dance Moms Season 2 Volume 2

In the closeness of Lee’s Pittsburgh’s dance studio, Miller’s sternness may be justified–she does have a knack for churning out winning dancers–and this could be considered as one of the successes of this series. Every mother featured believes their daughter will be the next star on Broadway–and with this success comes a price. One of the moms admitted that she pays upwards of $16,000 per year for her child to attend school and this cost is at the low end of the price spectrum. In addition to the often inappropriate dress and make-up that some of these girls wear,  the stress of it all just crushes many of the dancers. The show definitely has its share of tears–from everyone.

Overall, when it is all said and done, Dance Moms is what it is–exhausting. Granted, there is plenty of talent in the series, and you can never get enough of Miller’s dance “specifics” and the mothers’ constant motivations. The series features an astoundingly powerful cast and successfully immerses itself in real dance competitions, and this is where the series’ success lies. Sure the shows are edited to emphasize the drama–by people who are willing to sacrifice privacy for fame and fortune.

Which is why Dance Moms is so damn addictive.
